Link to Folder from Contact Field

If you have a folder for a client, or a folder of important documents, and don't necessarily want to attach each and every document to an ACT! record, this field use "trick" will help.  Using a URL field, you can actually type in a directory path, and - when clicked - will open an Explorer window to that directory.

Here's how to do this:
  1. Go to Tools>Define Fields on the menu.
  2. View Fields for: Contact or Company depending on where you want this field.
  3. Create a new field, naming it whatever you'd like.  The key here is to make Field Data Type: URL Address
  4. Finish the field creation process, and then
  5. Place this new field on your Contact or Company layout, again depending on where you created the field.
Now that you have the field, the syntax - or what to type in the field - is important:
  1. The field value must begin with file://
  2. The remaining text must be a valid directory
Here's an example of an entry in my ACT! database - a "Demo" directory under my Documents:

...and when it's clicked on, that directory opens in Explorer:

Hope this helps!
